Born on Sulon and commissioned into the Imperial military, Kyle Katarn wore the uniform before he questioned it. His defection to the Rebel Alliance brought with it something the Rebellion rarely encountered: an officer's training combined with a willingness to work in the shadows. Paired with fellow agent Jan Ors, he ran covert operations that struck at the Empire's most ambitious projects — among them the Dark Trooper Programme.
The turning point came not on a battlefield but in the search for himself. Learning he was Force-sensitive, Katarn did what few Jedi candidates ever do — taught himself, without a master, while hunting for the Valley of the Jedi. That search forced him to face the dark side from the inside out, and then in the form of High Inquisitor Jerec. Defeating Jerec there made him a Jedi Master.
Jedi Master was not the end of the arc. Katarn fell to the dark side, was redeemed by his padawan Mara Jade, cut himself from the Force entirely, and eventually returned — to the Praxeum, to teaching, and finally to a seat on the New Jedi Order's High Council. Both designs on this page trace that full span: soldier to shadow operative to Jedi Master.
Few lives in the Legends era were rewritten as many times as his — and each rewrite made the legend harder to put down.
